(60,728 posts)I did respect that they served, but beyond that I agreed with their values on things like the food stamp program ( that McGovern led on), health care (Kerry worked with Kennedy on the precursor bill to SCHIP(Kerry/Kennedy) and on mental health parity), the environment (Kerry was as good as anyone in the Senate on that issue.)
Both McGovern and Kerry were good men of integrity and honor. Both leaned on their service to criticize a war that as Kerry has recently said - could have been avoided if diplomats had done their job. With both of them, I agree with them on almost everything and I respected them as people.
Webb did serve and was a war hero. He also STILL insists that the Vietnam War was popular and could have been won. He also refused for over 30 years to shake John Kerry's hand - because of Webb's belief that the war - if we continued - could have been won. (Kerry in 2006 actually endorsed Webb in the primary as he had the best chance to win and raised most of the GOTV money Webb had - showing a magnanimity that I have rarely seen by politicians.)
Then there are other problems - Webb, as Secretary of the Navy under Reagan, had a terrible record in terms of dealing with women subordinates. It is also disturbing that in this century, he defends those who want the confederate flag to be honored. On many votes when he was a Senate, he was not a sure thing. His biggest value was that he was the 51st Democratic Senator giving us the majority.
So, compared to EVERY Democrat running I disagreed with him the most on issues and I am unimpressed by him as a person.
