I tried to explain that the US is basically an island and that any potential enemy (excluding the possibility of us being invaded by either Canada or Mexico) has a bleeding ocean to cross and there is no way a Normandy style invasion of the continental US would ever succeed.
No shifting him in the least

My long gun of choice for self defense at home is a shotgun, a VEPR 12.

Depends on the shotgun. Some of the newer designs such as the Kel-Tec KSG and USAS-15

Rounds are going to penetrate walls, doors, etc and endanger family members.

It depends on the particular loads used. Some 5.56mm ammo from an AR-15 will penetrate less
