and I had to confront a home intruder, I would prefer the AR for reliability, accuracy, and terminal ballistics.

I know that might sounds crazy, but most AR rifle rounds are always going to hit harder and due more damage than pistol rounds. ARs are more reliable and accurate functionally. I know from my range time that if I'm not concentrating, muzzle flipping can lead to stovepiping. With shotguns you may have a 5" spread at 10 feet and 10" spread at 20 feet depending on ammo.

There are downsides to the AR. A 5.56 round will penetrate more walls than 9mm or 00 if you miss. AR is longer than a pistol, but typically shorter than a shotgun.
