(4,762 posts)But I suspect rising on the national stage may have bent Bernie in the right direction on this issue-- it was one of few issues where Hillary held his feet to the fire, and here hernia showing up for the fight.
I agree that his Brady Bill vote was disappointing, more so for the way it proves he is a professional politician. His constituents include Rural Vermonters just like Hillary's included Wall St bankers when she was senator.
In other ways it is important to have middle-grounders who understand amd have some trust from rural and pro-gun constituencies to combat the NRA. As a rural Texan by birth and upbringing (grew up hunting, in other words) I think most rational hunters and gun owners support a lot of rational control measures -- which surveys show is true for closing the gunshow loophole and expanding background checks at least.
Pat Toomey and Joe Manchin and Susan Collins are all folks I think we can get and need to get on the good side here.
I guess I'm trying to find common ground on this issue. I think we are all sick of NRA polarizing rhetoric.
