In reply to the discussion: Why are shooting sports still allowed at the Olympics? [View all]mythology
(9,527 posts)90. I would argue for it being removed as not a real sport
Much like bowling it's not a sport. It's an activity. If you can do it properly without sweating or being out of breath, it's not a sport. Yes it's hard, but difficulty alone isn't enough to make something a sport. Likewise I consider any of the equestrian events sports either as it's the horse doing the real work.
And while I'm grousing about the Olympics, I really wish people would stop calling Michael Phelps the greatest Olympian because his sport considers the 100, 200, 400, etc different events for every different style of swimming stroke.

Ok, your opinion. Others have different opinions, including gun control advocates.

And the fact that the skill facilitates faster and easier killing is a coincidence?

You have a point. I will say that the olympics don't have the events most gun nuts find exciting --

I enjoy shooting at targets. I find it a relaxing hobby and meet some nice people there.

No, I'd rather take my firearms to the range and shoot them. Besides, about 99.99% of them are not

View it as part of sick habit, but depends on what you fantasize about when squeezing the trigger.

Minority opinion? 80-100 million gun owners (fanciers as you call them) owning 350 firearms

Do the math -- 25 - 33% of population. That a minority. And of that, a lot just have an old gun

Yes I'm aware of the politicization of the olympics. 1936 for example. Still doesn't make Archery
