"Bins" are a super common place to place IEDs. In Iraq, the trash bins were removed because they wewre so commonly used as drop sites for IEDs. In NYC, postal boxes on the street are locked closed before major events to keep them from having bombs place inside. Generally speaking, putting the bomb into something doesn't muffle shit. The energy will escape one way or another. When binned, it will just take the container along for the ride.

Putting a bomb in a bin is less conspicuous, but I doubt it'd "muffle" it much
