(12,132 posts)he was a Chief Warrant Officer but I have no idea how that shakes out in the hierarchy. He was a mechanic and proud to be one. I just remember thinking as a kid "Hey that's pretty cool. They saluting my grandpa!"
Of course he always has been and always will be one of my personal heroes so I just figure everybody should salute him.
A couple weeks ago he asked me to drive him out to the BX and it was kind of sad. He just wanted some shirts and a few groceries but I really think he was just thinking of shopping with grandma. He didn't get anything there he couldn't have gotten at his local Publix and the nearby Penneys. (The BX is a good 45 minute~hour drive depending on traffic). But he liked looking around the store - we went up and down every single aisle. On the way home he said "thanks for bringing me out here...I imagine that was my last trip there." (he's 95)
He and Grandma used to go every other week or at least once a month. But she's been gone a few years now and he really misses her. I worry that he's in a hurry to see her again - a) because I don't like thinking about a world without him in it and, b) I'm an atheist so I don't think he's gonna get see her again.
But there's nothing I won't do for that man so however he wants to play out his final years I'm here to help him.
