General Discussion
In reply to the discussion: Ron Paul: for the record, and just my humble o. [View all]Ron Paul, in an interview, speaking against the laws that ended slavery, that might have in
fact started the Civil War, had said the following, in a CNN interview a couple of years ago.
"States would have ended slavery on their own without it, eventually, it wasn't profitable."
That's about 90% correct I think, identical in meaning to what he said on CNN on that day.
Lie. Slavery was the most profitable large-scale business in US history. Just name one that
pays people nothing, feeds them scraps you'd throw out anyway, and makes them all work.
Hard work. It built the southern economy and much of the US economy. For almost no cost,
cotton is harvested, sold, all profits to the owners / brokers / bankers involved with cotton.
Ron Paul isn't stupid. He knew what he said was a lie. God knows if by the mid 20th century,
given how profitable it was, with no federal law - many states likely would still have slavery.
The worst isn't the lie, it's the 'market-based solution'. Instead of saying 'the govt should've
ended slavery sooner, as it's inhumane', he offered a false idealistic, market-based 'solution'.
