There was an actual need for the STORIES back in the time of the sexual revolution because many of them involved women with hangups going on a mission of exploration and becoming a more emancipated person in the end. More confident and "comfortable in their own skin". But this was back it the early days when women weren't supposed to enjoy sex.

It seems every time we start to get over our hangups there's a major setback. People were having loads of fun and all of the sudden AIDS shows up out of the blue and what used to be a happy meal became poison. Lots of people feel the timing of that was too damn convenient for the religious control freaks.

Don't get me wrong. The original poster had a point in the type of stuff out there treating women like objects but a lot of women are still in search of the liberating storyline which is prevalent in romance novels. While men are more visually stimulated, women are more into what men used to call "mush".
