15. "Resent the dues coming out of their paycheck"

Close, IMO but not deep enough.

I worked for a large western retail chain owned by Kroger and many felt the UFCW was next to worthless. Older employess rubbed it in our faces that they're eligible for cadillac pensions while we're stuck with shitty 401(k)'s and that they get sweet, sweet health coverage but under our contract it was craptastic Kaiser.

The resentment comes in when a young employee hearing of all these goodies goes to the union man and asks "When will I become eligible for the pension?" only to be told "Sorry, your contract doesn't include a defined benefit pension like the previous ones."

One exasperated service clerk asked the union rep at a meet 'n' greet "So what the fuck are we paying money to you for? You haven't done shit for us! The old timers get gold and we get dirt. They get Sunday premium but we only get base. How have you fought for us?"

The reply? A shoulder shrug and "You get what the contract allows for".

This, my Union preferring friend, is why there is a metric shit ton of resentment among union workers. It's apparent they had balls back in the day when negotiating but now they seem to just rubber stamp the company's wishlist.

As for not getting the point until the realize they need the union, the reason I left employment at the company was because I was literally cussed out by a manager IN FRONT OF CUSTOMERS. When I approached our steward to file a grievance all I got was the trademark UFCW shoulder shrug.
