...there would be outright rioting in the streets if the people were presented with a situation where, although candidate A won the vote, candidate B was actually going to become their leader due to an arcane process that dictated that it wasn't how many votes you won, it was where you won them.

I know, we've had the electoral college around for centuries, but most people probably only grudgingly tolerated it with the understanding that cases where the popular vote loser would be "elected" would be few and far between. And, for the first two-hundred-plus years of our country, that was the case. But, now, it's happened twice in the past sixteen years. At what point do we declare that this is an intolerable situation for a supposed democracy?
