(58,785 posts)field believing they would always be part of something vital and important. Oh, well. I'm sure not mourning passage of an era where TV "news" was degraded to a few carefully inoffensive sentences between large blocks of commercials--fed to a traditionally captive audience.
I do worry a lot about what comes next. How does journalism fulfill its role in democracies as people move on to picking and choosing their favorite flavors among an incredible selection of video feeds? Will representative government turn out to be an effectively unworkable model in the Information Age?
Even supposedly respectable information sources are potentially very destructive. How about the willingness and ability of a wire service to instantly blanket the nation with a ridiculous but devastating lie about a presidential candidate? Or Comey-type strikes instantaneously delivered to many millions of personal devices?
