It's similar to anti-gay politicians who suddenly have an epiphany and become more tolerant when one of their kids comes out.

Once it becomes personal, then it's an issue. Prior to that, it's just "other" people who are being affected, so who cares?

That is, of course, one of the basic differences between liberals and conservatives. Liberals generally understand how life affects other people before they're personally affected. Conservatives generally don't care unless or until they're personally affected. Sometimes, not even then - Strom Thurmond comes to mind.
