4. I think that would have been a less surprising result

We knew Trump had groupthink scattered throughout the US, and that there could be enough voters dispersed throughout to give him the popular vote. It was the unexpected concentration in historically blue states that was a surprising revelation.
So, just based on that, the media coverage would have been different. Democratic pundits would be defending the electoral college and minimizing the popular vote, and republicans would be calling for it to be abolished.
