I read Nevil Shute's novel when I was rather young.

These days, Stanley Kramer's 1959 film serves well. Yes, the film may be somewhat flawed, and Shute hated it. However, the acting is quite good with some exceptional standouts. Ava Gardner is incredible, as usual. The real surprise is Fred Astaire who absolutely nails his first dramatic role. Gregory Peck turns in his usual very fine effort. The supporting cast is equally good. Look for John Meillon (Crocadile Dundee's mate) abandoning the Sawfish in San Francisco Bay.

The short poignant scene near the end between Admiral Bridie and Lieutenant Hosgood always brings me to tears.
