In the 20 years we've had our farm I've had two face to face encounters with cougars. Both at a distance of 100ft or so, these are very intimidating animals and not to be take lightly at all. We've got a pair of Great Pyrenees who look out after us and our livestock. We try not to mess with the indigenous life forms and so far we've been fortunate that they have chosen to leave us alone.

I was disappointed that the other husky didn't come to the aid of his partner, but they did look kind of young in the video. My guys work together and if one of them gets into something, the other one is right there. Normally this is a good thing but the morning of the porcupine encounter, well that's another story for another time.

The way our winter is going, Jan/Fed may be tough, extended periods of way below seasonal average temps thus far may lead to real hunger and boldness on our local predators part, we'll see.

Hope I don't get into any situation like that young man. He was correct in the video, something had gone wrong with that cougar and it would have presented a real danger to the community. He's also right in his observation that they are magnificent creatures and it's never a joyful time when one needs to be dispatched.
