(81,993 posts)Fellow republi-CONS, many of whom served in the House with him. He's who they really want. AND don't forget, he was able to do tremendous damage to his state with his far-right, my-religion-trumps-your-rights, and anti-LGBTQ moves that passed easily in Indiana and lost millions of dollars in business, corporations moving away, conventions canceling, jobs lost or moved out of state with those defecting companies. He made a huge mess. But he COULD. Because he had the whole infrastructure of a CON state legislature moving in lockstep behind him. Indiana's a blood-red state. We have those same kinds of conditions on Capitol Hill now. A President Mike Pence would have the wind at his back, and he'd likely do far more damage than even trump could. Besides, trump's offended far more people, and Pence has reliably always been around to try to walk it back and smooth things over and clean up the surface imaging.
The only benefit I could see would be that this four-year term would be broken up. Hopefully neither one of 'em could get much accomplished with their time in office truncated and disrupted like this. IMPEACHMENT proceedings would be VERY disruptive and carnivorous. They'd suck all the air out of the room and dominate the headlines for months. Kinda hard to get stuff done when you have a head-wind like that working against you, and more questions to answer about the IMPEACHMENT proceedings than about your so-called agenda. Last time, it kinda ground things in Washington to a halt. The whole Clinton thing, and before that, Nixon. It becomes the Godzilla that eats Manhattan (and beyond).
A hamstrung republi-CON fighting off a scandal so messy that it leads to IMPEACHMENT is a good thing. It can cripple an administration for the duration. And that's a VERY good thing. The more and the longer that trump or trump/pence can be PREVENTED from being up to no good, the better.
Btw - I'm writing IMPEACHMENT in caps again now. To add emphasis and draw attention to it. It'd be nice to see a drumbeat get started. In practicality, we're probably gonna have to wait for the purported "honeymoon" phase to end and the novelty and "let's give the new guy a chance" crap to wear off. So we won't see anything for awhile.
