The Cleves marriage was a tactical blunder. Cromwell got full of himself and forgot who his boss was, what his boss was capable of, and what his boss was actually saying to him at the time ("no Cleves marriage.&quot There was little tactical advantage to the Cleves marriage except some minor leverage against Spain/Holy Roman Empire in the Low Countries, which could have been accomplished by other means.

Anne of Cleves was a pawn deployed too soon and for the wrong reasons. Fortunately for her, she managed to escape with her life. Cromwell wasn't so fortunate, to his own ruin, and to the ruin of many who came after.
