(291 posts)Probably many reasons why people voted for Trump and it is likely just the emotionally polarized die-hards who show up for the rallies. Other people may have just voted straight ticket Republican because it's what they do. And others because of the payoff they figured they would get by having the branches of government all in Republican hands--somewhere $$$ and imposing particular values come in.
The "values voters" think the US is going to hell in a handbasket. There is no reasoning action to take with hardline positions, but you can try to achieve understanding. I realize this sounds trite, but understanding why people do what they do without seeing them through the fog of our own anger or sense of superiority (whereever we think we possess it) is a really difficult task. All of us have to take responsibility for where we are right now, even if we think we are blameless--we as a country in this place and time are a sick organism at war with itself and being a part of it, we cannot extricate ourselves.
