(15,412 posts)I was raised an atheist and in my youth, especially my college years, I argued God with anyone who wanted to engage. No one changed my mind and I didn't change anyone's mind.
Since then I know the only way to change their minds is to be an example of what a "good" atheist is. I never talk about my religious views when I know those around me don't agree but I do talk about my values in a way I know they will agree. When they find out I'm an atheist, and the inevitably do, I want them to think "I thought atheists were evil people but she is not so maybe not all atheists are evil."
I live in a deep red state. I treat politics like religion. I won't talk about it with people who have a religious zeal about it (not all who voted for Trump are zealots) and my good example may escape them. But If just one says "she's a liberal and not a bad person" it will be worth it.
