I think for some, and I see it a bit on our side too, though not as much, is that it's like sports teams. Trump is their team and no matter what he says it's ok. For instance many of the more populist things Trump has SAID he's for, they would have condemned a democrat for saying as liberal ideas.

So I think there is a real brand identification regardless of actual ideology.
