(7,358 posts)is a very difficult job. People shouldn't have to rely on tips to make a living. It's a crap shoot every day/night. You just can't count on making $100 or $50 each day/night. I worked in the high end restaurants. One of which I worked for 17 years. A lot of politics are at play between the Maitre d' and the waiters. If he likes you, you get seated, or seated with the ''high rollers'', if he has a problem with you, it's grandma and grandpa or a couple with an obnoxious kid. Although kids are uncommon in high end restaurants. I know some waiters who actually pay the Maitre d' to seat them with the creme de la creme customers. It can be a very unfair system, you see. So remember that the next time you saunter in to Le Cirque or the Russian Tea Room, you're being profiled. So dress well.
