5. Well, as has been stated before, some people just want to see the world burn.

When you get enough technology so that the rigidly and morbidly self-centered wealthy who are sure they are the elite of the world can affect large groups of population instantly, they're going to want to ensure those populations are buried with them when they go.
That way, one doesn't have to justify oneself to the future. One goes out being "the greatest", and that's that. They win.

It's the right of ancient tribal kings. When they're gone, their world is gone also. Their slaves and all their prized possessions were buried with them.

And that's why the current Republicans - and other Oligarchic mobsters - are willing to destroy the world. It means their God wins. Their "Team" wins. Ultimately, they win. Who cares if there's only the dying left to witness their triumphs?

"Look upon my Works and Despair!" - as winds whip sand from thousands of miles away over the empty ruins of their mansions and country clubs a hundred years from now and surviving insects - and maybe a few small rodents - scurry for cover.
