1789 to 1865 was practically one long series of compromises in an effort to prevent secession and civil war.

next donnie will argue that jackson *did* prevent civil war; after all, it didn't happen on his watch!

as for jackson's legendary anger, it seemed mostly directed at native americans, not against avoiding civil war.
and certainly not against slavery, as he was a slaver himself.
