(37,648 posts)He's talking about HIM having to buy maternity care. Not having to pay for someone else's maternity care because his premiums are thrown into the pool.
There really is an argument to be made for all Obamacare (individual market) policies not being the same. It's like a group policy, but the individuals are, well, individuals, and so have no negotiation power, like a business. And the individual market doesn't give individual plan buyers a cut on the cost because it's a group plan, like businesses get when they buy a group policy. It really doesn't seem to make much sense, except as a "I get to charge you more" reason, since the ins. cos. get to pocket that money for benefits that not only will never be used by the insured, but CANNOT be used by him.
Maybe there's another reason for that, but I don't see it. It was never really explained, except to say that they wanted to protect people from being sold policies that didn't provide good benefits. But that has nothing to do with an ins. co. selling maternity benefits to someone that that medical condition cannot apply to. ???
