and have a long-standing local reputation for "renegotiating" your contracts to your advantage after the work is completed, you should expect shit work on the job and not enough backfill to support the new piping.

Totally avoidable issue for a truly professional business organization - treat your contractors right and don't "lowball" the work - or use those lazy assed Mob scammers to oversee that work.
