(4,483 posts)and you'll see that first, the Pope says something to her (in, I assume, Italian--or maybe Spanish ); Melania looks blank; a *translator* pops up from behind the Pope and you can hear him say, "He's asking you what you feed him."
Your honor, ladies and gentlemen of the jury, I rest my case. Melania is not fluent in Italian. I believe now, in fact, that she is not even vaguely comfortable in Italian--I mean, if she knew any Italian, surely a word or two would have been familiar to her. I'm not fluent in French, but I know that if a Frenchman asked me what I fed my husband, I'd have *some* idea of what he was saying (actually, I am pretty fluent, and I'd understand that perfectly) and react with a smile at least. Melania had no idea of what the Pope was talking about, and it's clear to me that the Pope had been informed of her soi-disant multilingualism, or he would have had the translator there ahead of time.
It was a charming thing for the Pope whom I love to have said.
