29. As one of those "lot of people"
Mon Dec 12, 2011, 06:19 PM
Dec 2011

I just say, first, that it's not clear from the poll how "liberal Democrats" are selected. Like, would Rahm Emanuel qualify as a "liberal Democrat" in this poll, and would you consider Rahm Emanuel to be a "liberal Democrat"? Second, what does "approve" mean? Is it in relation to a hypothetical Republican president? Or does it mean that the person has, in general, more positive feelings about President Obama than negative ones, and therefore "approves" of the job he's doing? Are there specific programs, policies or palaver that are polled, or is it just a general statement unrelated to particulars?

The "news" doesn't piss me off as much as the root meaningless of this bit of information, stuffed with whatever meaning some people choose to put in there. My strong suspicion is that it is used as a cudgel to marginalize legitimate concerns or to squelch discussion of issues important to all citizens: "Well, President Obama has an 84% approval rating among liberal Democrats, so your carping on Issue X is just proof of how out of touch you are, you dirty fucking hippie."
