38. I am an investigator for protective services for adults

We often go into situations that can be shocking. The hardest thing is to go into an environment that is offensive to the senses (smells and sights) and have a conversation with people in that environment. It is difficult to discuss things with perpetrators and not show a sense of judgement as well.

We all have those reactions. What I have found useful is to consider a very shocking situation in my head before asking a question or heading into an environment so that if it isn't that bad in reality, I am "underwhelmed". It works about 60% of the time.
