Figure out a way of nicely tell them they don't have to be watching the News all the time - tell them to remember when things were better off and people were more concerned about each other, the actual news was only on between 7 and 8 in the morning and 5 to 6 in the evening - there's still not that much news going on. If they need filler TV, HGTV or The Weather Channel are much better.

The constant repetition of the same "News" over and over turns everything into a Sports Event, which isn't right. And when there's no change 24 hour News makes situations seem more important than they really are and makes people more and more anxious and fearful. And you can't make a good decision of you're scared or angry, right?
