Second, in answer to your question, I guess if we knew what to do we'd be doing it.

Certainly confronting the idiocy with facts is useful, but I think that, in large measure, the right wing is rather impervious to facts that don't support their preconceived notions. Once in a while, though, you do manage to crack the denial. We know that sometimes people abandon their right-wing ideologies in favor of more humane perspectives.

If you aren't familiar with the writings of George Lakoff (The Political Mind), Drew Westen (The Political Brain) and Daniel Kahneman (Thinking: Fast and Slow), that would be a good place to start. You can get the gist of their ideas by scanning relevant articles in Wikipedia, which will help generate some ideas about changing beliefs, attitudes, etc.
