If you have an HMO with a $15k deductible per person, that's a catastrophic policy, which you probably did not have before. It's basically only good for a catastrophic illness. HMOs are less costly than PPOs, as well, which you may have had before. HMOs also come with much narrower drug and provider lists (that's partly why they're cheaper).

So you don't have the same thing you had before. My $450 to $800 jump in price was comparing similar policies for a person over 55.

I would have liked to get a catastrophic policy, but Obamacare prevents the selling of catastrophic policies to people over a certain age. So there was little I could do to get my premium down. The cheapest I could buy in 2017 was $800 for bronze HMO high deductible. I can't afford that, so get a subsidy. But I bought up this year. Wish I wouldn't have, but I can't change it.
