Ford was a toothless tiger. The only thing he accomplished was pardoning Nixon and whipping up a frenzy over inflation (remember Whip Inflation Now, or W.I.N.?) and he got killed come 1976 for that. The Congress wasn't really listening to him and the american people dismissed him out of hand.

And, he was not an unpopular character before any of that. He was seen as a good and honorable man but when he got caught up in the wake of Watergate he might as well have been on the ship as it went down.

I'm sure you recall him being the butt of comics' jokes. Chevy Chase launched his career by lampooning Ford. Ford trips on the steps and now he's a national joke. If it weren't for the stain of Watergate, that never would have happened.

Coming in to mop up the blood after a total disaster of an administration running off in disgrace is not an aid in pushing an agenda
