(6,324 posts)The nation live perilously on the edge of famine day to say anyway, but they are in the midst of a drought that is worse than they have seen in several decades that is decimating their already meager crop production.
By this winter, unless either they get rid of a lot of the population or they get massive food aid given to them they will have a huge famine.
Meanwhile Kim devotes all the resources he has available not to food or improving agricultural output and technology but on middles and nuclear weapons.
His end game will either be going for broke with all out war to capture the ROK's resources or use that as a tool to blackmail everyone into giving them food aid. Rational thinkers will assume it's the latter choice as it is the more rational of the two, but there is nothing rational about how the North Koreans act or think.
If he does plan to start hostilities it won't be until the winter. The North will want to wait until the rice paddies are drained and the bottoms frozen to make advancing south easier. If the attack in the summer and are limited to roads it would be a turkey shoot for ROK and the UN forces.
