I have not been in favor of the huge importance of college athletics for awhile. I think the emphasis should be on STUDENT athletes that are students first and athletes second to avoid exactly what you are saying. As it is now, many of the students there for an education are prevented from competing on the sports teams as they are pushed out by all the "ringers" who are only there as a gateway to the pros and see school as secondary

Would the football teams would become more diverse with more asian and middle eastern students being able to participate if we removed colleges from being farm teams for the pro sports with little regard for education? Let the athletes who merely see college as a gateway to the pros go directly into pro sports.

The unintended consequences of your position is since most college athletes don't go to the pros, that many would end up with nothing. Under the current system they do have the opportunity for a degree that may ordinarily be out of reach
