(68,436 posts)than she could have as a president hemmed in on all sides by a hostile, obstructionist Congress. I hate when people, especially those who are supposed to be on our side, bark and bay at her to get out of public life and shut up.
She is our elder stateswoman. We need to honor her and listen to her--and BTW, I supported Bernie in the primaries, but I like HRC, too, and enthusiastically supported her in the GE.
I do get frustrated by all the posts that bash Bernie and his supporters. Most of us, especially here on DU, are Hillary's supporters, too. We just lean a bit further left than she felt safe leaning in public.
Frankly, I believe her core beliefs are as leftist as his are, but that for various reasons--including the fact that RW propaganda has convinced the US public that they are not as left-leaning on the issues as they actually are, as well as the fact that she is a woman and therefore felt constrained to present herself as tougher and more "centrist" than she really is--she has not publicly espoused outright socialism by name as Bernie has.
I never really thought Bernie would win the nomination, but I would have been satisfied no matter whether he, Hillary, or O'Malley had been nominated. I was delighted, though, that by running he pushed the conversation, the party, and the party platform back toward New Deal democratic socialism.
I was also delighted that by becoming so popular, especially with independents and among the young, he helped remove the stigma that socialism has been so successfully branded with by RW propaganda since the end of WWII.
I bet Hillary herself, even though she still feels frustrated that he kept running (which, BTW, he did to maximize his and his supporters' visibility and influence at the convention, on the party platform, and after the GE regardless of who won) is glad to be able to espouse more socialist positions than she could safely espouse before the 2016 campaign.
Those who know her well have often said that she was more left-leaning than Bill, though she recognized that she had to present as "centrist" because of the US public's ignorance about and prejudice against anything labeled as leftist or socialist.
