news coverage on the networks and cable, maybe because you were there and infrastructure was destroyed and TV wasn't available.

Well, the majority of news reporters were calling the people of New Orleans "refugees" as if they weren't Americans but foreigners fleeing war.

I vividly remember Gen. Honore when he took command and ordered those white guardsmen training their guns on the mostly black storm victims to: "Get those weapons down".

It took him to remind the guardsmen and the rest of the country that the people in need of help were American citizens, not fleeing refugees to be looked down on.

You might call that being a big shot, I call it re-setting the narrative and doing what a general is supposed to.

He didn't earn general officer level, and a three-star at that, by being shy.

From then on the use of the word refugees by reporters went down.
