(202,970 posts)And, using diplomacy, to avoid getting us into war. Even President Roosevelt, our most famous wartime president, was reluctant to enter the war that was already raging in Europe. It took Pearl Harbor for him to realize he had no other choice. And it was the same for World War I.
I have President Carter's autobiography and he goes into detail about the various conflicts where he was called on to use his gifts for diplomacy to settle disputes all over the globe. He is best remembered for the Camp David Accords where he negotiated the agreement between Israel and Egypt - which still stands today. There were numerous times when both Anwar Sadat and Menachem Begin were prepared to walk out, but President Carter was determined and used every bit of skill and knowledge he had to persuade them to come to an agreement - it was that important.
And there were numerous other times when he was called on by other administrations. He negotiated the agreement with North Korea on behalf of the Clinton administration that held until 2002. War has been viewed by every president as a very last resort.
But now we have Trump who has managed to insult and anger even our oldest and closest allies. Just now it's the British - but he started with China and Australia even before he took office. And he seems equally determined to provoke the North Koreans which could result in an unprecedented catastrophe that could affect entire planet!
I can't imagine how other countries view his stupidity and recklessness - which doesn't just endanger Americans, but the entire world.
