(13,081 posts)All inherited from various family members, some weirder than others? (Like, what the fuck am I going to do with an Uzi? Who buys one of these things? And then leaves it in the box, but uses more expensive guns?)
I sold many of them years ago, about the time my kid was old enough to start walking and getting into shit. I kept a few because I felt I had to. Theyre fully functional, or would be if all the parts were in the same building, but there are clear instructions in my will on how to reassemble them and which museum I want them donated to.
The only one I kept for self-defense I literally took apart piece by piece after Newtown. I threw one piece in the garbage every day. Did I lose money? Yeah. Was it a futile gesture? Probably. But I know that of the five hundred million firearms in the streets, it wont be MINE thats responsible for yet another tragedy.
It was selfish, stupid, and irresponsible to keep it as long as I did.
And I was making the world a shittier place. One more gun is one more piece of fuel in the forge of the American Gun Nut. Weve been letting billion dollar industries write the regulations and the propaganda, and American gun culture has, in the last couple of decades, become something really perverse.
