(5,420 posts)I actually hate guns. My brother was killed by one and I always felt that if you have guns in your house, you are opening yourself up to a tragic accident unless you are very diligent.
Growing up, my dad kept a loaded shotgun behind the front door. A pistol in the bedroom was kept loaded. They would never have guessed that we would from time to time "play" with them. I remember my brother once doing a russian roulette kind of thing with that pistol. I'm sure my parents thought we were smart enough to leave them alone, but nope.
Since then, (it's been like 25 years since my brother died, much later in a self induced accident and not russian roulette at all ,but a shot gun that hit the floor and went off) we moved to the country. Police take a while to get here. Just yesterday a car broke down near my daughters country home. The man rang the bell, which she declined to answer. The man then plugged his cell phone into her outside elect. outlet.
He did her no harm other than scaring her, but if he had other intentions, the police would not have gotten to her in time to help. She tells me it has lately been the thing to rob secluded country homes because of the seclusion.
In the country you need a gun.
I still don't like them but when a fox tries to clean out my chicken coop, I will grab the rifle and defend my flock. I will shoot an intruder if pressed.
Other people and why they like guns so much? Not quite sure. They have a supposed coolness to them, I guess. A manly thing I guess too. They don't impress me though. I still don't like them, but I do see the usefulness of them.
I am not against stopping people from having ak47's and the like. However, this is not the issue in this country that bothers me so I don't usually chime in on it.
