However....I do believe a country must show empathy collectively in order to set an example to the populace. As evidenced when W was in office, the population often follows the example set for it by the leaders of the country. You can teach your children empathy, you can foster empathy within your community through projects like Roots of Empathy but when your country tortures, starts wars, strong arms other nations, refuses to care for its own vulnerable citizens, the collective mindset is difficult to sway.
