he allegedly spoke to her mother and offered to “look out for her” while the mother was in court. So, in his mind, he believed he did get permission to be with the girl. And he just relied on that as approval. That was his cover.

You and I know that is a far cry from meeting the girl secretly, taking her to a secluded place and attempting to have a sexual encounter with her, even if his ultimate goal failed. After all, he is a pedophile, not your common, every day rapist. He had his standards.
