(2,141 posts)The situation with Senator Franken pushed me to join this forum. I am very grateful to those who posted phone numbers and links to members of the Senate so that I could express my opinions to them.
As to those who point out that it is all just politics or that we should just get over it-- Politics may, indeed, require compromise, but it is up to every individual to decide which compromises are acceptable. Further, it is the responsibility of every citizen of good conscience to put forth the effort to elevate the level of political discourse.
"Getting over" our disappointment regarding Franken's ouster is also an individual challenge. Each of us will process our feelings at our own pace. Some may linger over feelings of anger, others will be weighted down by dismay.
I take comfort in reading the perspectives of others who support Franken and examine the issue from differing angles. It was difficult for me to make that first call to Franken's office because I did not wish to be perceived as a "bad" feminist. I also did not want to be so partisan-minded that I could not examine the facts of the situation fairly.
The many comments and differing backgrounds of the members here have assured me that we are not in lockstep or blinded to reality simply because Al Franken is a Democrat. It is good for us to disagree. It is good for us to question.
We are citizens, not subjects. The current administration, and many members of our legislature-- of both parties--would do well to remember this.
We must not allow them to think that we have lost sight of our power.
