In reply to the discussion: Arrest Made in Ferguson Shooting That Injured 2 Police Officers [View all]wcast
(595 posts)If the story is accurate, one man shot those officers. However the prevailing tactic is to decry all protestors, or in this case, all protestors of a certain race, in order to marginalized the message. Ferguson has had problems for many years, and is only one example of how people of color are treated on a daily basis. When evidence is shown of mistreatment, many look for ways to minimize the treatment with the old "they deserve it" standby.
Whatever happened in the Mike Brown case doesn't change the unjust system that was in place in Ferguson and continues to operate unabated in most of America. Seeing people of color as inferior is part of American DNA and has been indoctrinated with our citizenry since 1620. Consequently many white Americans conflate the negative actions of a person of color to the whole group, using it to justify the actions that happened.
Right now most white Americans never experience in their lives the injustices that people of color experience on an almost daily basis, but the old saying is true. What goes around comes around. If we idly sit by blaming the victims of institutional bias and discrimination, it won't be much longer before we suffer the same fate.
