The aftermath of the Cultural revolution made living off tree bark, old shoes and dead bodies the norm outside Beijing. That was in the 60's, not that long ago. Life is cheap in China and the military would keep the peoples republic under control. The US economy and worthless debt would never recover from such a blow.
