(11,194 posts)The VP should be able to parlay the "favorite son" factor into winning his home state, thereby delivering more electoral votes. That's why John McCain should have chosen Tom Ridge of Pennsylvania rather than Sarah Palin of Alaska. That, and Palin was completely unqualified. Ridge might have swung 21 electoral votes to McCain, whereas Palin gave him nothing. He already had Alaska's paltry 3 electoral votes sewn up.
By this reasoning, Hillary should not choose someone from California. While it does have the most electoral votes, they pretty much belong to the Democratic candidate already. A VP candidate from Florida, Ohio, or maybe Texas makes more sense. It might be tough to win Texas, but Ohio and Florida could be winnable and it looks really hard for a Republican to win the White House without winning both of those states.
