This social-political deficit is not going away anytime soon.
Republicans have known for decades that in order to ensure power in the face of the on-going efforts of Democrats to grant rights and what Republicans saw as privileges that only some should have, they deliberately courted the "Christian" vote, and began to use their corporate allies to help lobby against these social changes. They also planned to ensure the perpetuation of power through redistricting and through disenfranchisement. Loyal Republicans in Congress were rewarded with plum positions after leaving office, and those who did not push the ideological agenda were treated poorly. On top of that Republicans knew they would have to dumb down the population which they have been successfully doing by de-funding schools and influencing school curriculum, while at the same time taking over the media. Fox News was specifically designed to help Republicans stay in power and to help very rich people and corporations have public support while they shed themselves of impediments such as regulations, oversight, union advocacy, taxes, and responsibilities.
