I remember the clothes they wore were stiff as boards, as though they'd been soaked with dirty black water and then dried. I remember, too, my grandpap filling the bottom part of his bucket with water and the top with potato peelings. I remember the stories mother told me about the coal camps where she grew up, where miners were paid in that play-money called "scrip" and where nobody went in or out of the camp without the armed mine guards knowing . .. I mean: gotta keep that bolshevik union out.
I always loved that Seal of West Virginia with its farmer and miner symbolism. Sad, how both are pretty near extinct . . . probably because nobody thought to put them on an endangered species list.
