In reply to the discussion: Conservative group sets up nativity scene in Capitol; move angers anti-religion group [View all]happyslug
(14,779 posts)The Governor, who is subject to a recall, is looking to paint the people who want him removed as left wing nut cases, while he is a politician who is listening to the people.
He did this by permitting the Nativity scene, then watch the people who oppose such things on Government property fall all over themselves to protest it. They may even file a lawsuit to force the State to remove the Nativity scene. The Governor wins whether the people who want the Nativity scene removed wins or lose. If the "Freedom from Religion" group wins, he complies with the Court order, but can then say he was just trying to accommodate everyone. If the "Freedom from Religion" loses the lawsuit, he then would have shown he can stand up for the little people who wanted this Nativity Scene up.
Furthermore the Governor knows he is unpopular with the economic left do to his actions to cut Unions and pay. He knows many people who are Economic Left (Union members and supporters) are also Social Conservatives, i.e. support religion and oppose gay marriage. Thus his support for the Nativity Scene divides the biggest group of people who oppose him, the Economic Left. Divide and Conquer has long been the policy of the GOP and this battle over this Nativity Scene is one way to divide and Conquer.
If I was advising anyone, I would tell the "Freedom from Religion" group NOT to file a lawsuit, they have done enough damage all ready by falling into the trap laid by the Governor when this Nativity Scene went up. We have to pick our battles, and right now the most important battle is the Economic Battle which includes the recall of this Governor, and this battle over these statures is his attempt to stop that recall. Do NOT fall into his trap, just ignore these statutes.
