In reply to the discussion: Ted Cruz is ending his presidential campaign [View all]sofa king
(10,857 posts)I've been pointing out for a week that his fake-running mate trick only really makes sense if he's planning to bounce out as an independent. He'll be prevented from running in some states but the object will be to take electoral votes away from Trump, while Trump somehow magically takes electoral votes from the Democratic nominee (hey, this is a long-shot scenario to start with, here).
The idea is to make sure that nobody gets to 270. If Republicans can make that happen and not lose the House thanks to the Donald, they can still steal it by not voting on a successor to President Obama--and doing nothing is their strong suit. In that case, Speaker Paul Ryan would inherit the Presidency by default.
Furthermore, Ted and Carly would be able to soak up donations on the #nevertrump scam all the way to November, and keep the campaign cash at the end. Party insiders might even argue that such a run might retain enough interest to prevent Trump from polluting downstream races, even though it likely concedes the White House to the Dems.
Why wouldn't a couple of a-hole sociopaths take that option if they can?
